336-323 B. C. (Age of the coin, 2,200 years.) Obv. Very good. 5' Very fine. Rare and desir- able.

W.Zd 4 Jewish Half-Shekel of Judas Maccabaeus, 141 B. C. Rather poor, but shows type and inscription. Extremely rare. This piece was imported by Dr. Robert Morris.

Standard Dollar. Morgan’s original design. Wings of eagle broad, and laurel branch consisting of three small leaves. On the regular issue the wings are badly clipped, the branch consists of three three-pointed leaves, &c., &c. This pattern is of great rarity, the die being destroyed, and no speci- mens have been for sale at the Mint. Silver proof.

These patterns form but another leaf in the di«yracefnl story of the mismanagement of the United States Mint. In otlier countries, the Mint is the centie from which numismatic knowledge emanates. In this country the Mint abhors numismatic interests. It serves to coin money, to be run as a political machine and to be abused by a certain class of its officials. It is a rule of the Mint, that patUmns shall be sold only during the year of issue, but this year the sale of the Barber-.Morgan dollars was refused by the Mint, while the officials, in a clandesiine manner, sold the>e patterns at enormous prices. Patterns forming a part ol' the numismatic progress and the histi>ry of C"in tge of a countiT, should be sold by the Mint to numismatists in limited numbers. As long as this is refused, there will be traud and disgrace.

The obverse die of this Medal was purchased at the time from the son-in-law of the late Mr. Eckfeld, by the late J. J. Mickley. After the death of the latter, the Mint tried to have the die seized, and tlie matter would have doubtless ended disgracefully to the Mint, but for the inter- ference of Col. A. Louden Snowden, who purchased the die from the Mickley estate, and presented it to the Mint.

Charles, Count of Anjou, King of Naples, becaime Suzerain in 12G7, in conse- quence of an alliance made by William, the son of GeottVey Villehar- douin, when pressed by the Byzantine forces. He was crowned King of Jerusalem, January, 1278. ’

Cornelius and John De Witt were two prominent statesmen of Holland, born at Dort, the former in 162.3, and ihe latter in 1625. They were also distinguished in naval warfare, especially in the battles with Eno'land: condemned to e.xile Augu.'-t 19, 1672, they were murdered at the Hague the following day. This line medal commemorates the event.

The ‘ ‘ Kingdom of Etruria ” was erected in favor of Louis, Luke of Parma, by Napoleon, in 1801. Charles Louis succeeded his father, Louis, under the regency of his mother, JNlaria Louisa, IMay 27, 1803. The'kingdom was taken possession of by Napoleon, December 10, 1807. But few coins of this short lived kingdom exist.
